Automating the palletizing process

A Scalable Entry Point to Smarter Production

In an industry where operational efficiency, quality, and workforce well-being are key competitive drivers, automating end-of-line tasks such as palletizing presents a low-threshold, high-impact opportunity for many production companies. Yet, for small and medium-sized manufacturers – even in highly regulated industries – this potential often remains untapped.

At PPS, we’ve seen a surge in demand for robotic palletizing solutions. Based on actual customer cases, we’ve designed a standardized, yet highly adaptable palletizing cell that enables companies to automate their end-of-line logistics with minimal disruption and a rapid return on investment.

The challenge: repetitive tasks and bottlenecks

Manual palletizing is still common in many facilities. It’s repetitive, physically demanding, and often leads to inefficiencies and ergonomic issues. These jobs are rarely attractive to employees and add little value to the production process. For companies operating in pharma, biotech, medical devices or similarly demanding sectors, such manual tasks also pose challenges to GMP compliance and scalability.

Automation here is not just about removing manual labor; it’s about reallocating resources, improving throughput, and preparing the production for future demands.

The PPS Palletizer

To meet these needs, PPS has developed the PPS Palletizer – a modular and validated palletizing solution based on the UR10e collaborative robot from Universal Robots. The robot is mounted on a vertical lift for dynamic range, and the setup includes:

  • Vacuum gripper (for boxes up to 10 kg)
  • Dual pallet station with seamless pallet switching
  • User-friendly pallet pattern software (no coding required)
  • Minimal footprint and easy relocation
  • Fast integration with existing conveyors or packaging lines

The solution enables the operator to configure pallet patterns directly from a PC and send them to the robot in real time. Switching between different layouts is possible without downtime or reprogramming, making it highly suitable for batch-based or multi-product production.

Additionally, all PPS solutions comes with complete documentation package.

Investment and ROI

The complete solution – including robot, gripper, lift module, pallet stations, software, and installation – starts at DKK 425,000.

Compared to traditional automation projects, this setup is fast to implement and does not require significant layout changes or long integration times. It is ideal as a company’s first step into automation or as a scalable addition to an already automated environment.

What Are the Gains?

  • Increased productivity
The robot operates continuously without breaks, significantly improving throughput while reducing staff workload on repetitive tasks.
  • Higher quality and precision
The robot ensures consistent pallet build quality, reducing errors and increasing packaging integrity.
  • Flexible and scalable setup
Easily relocate the palletizing cell to another line, or expand with new functions. Change configurations without involving external integrators.
  • Improved work environment
Automating the lifting and stacking reduces the risk of repetitive strain injuries and supports long-term workforce health.
