How Resino automated labelling and bucket handling
Resino Inks A/S is a Danish company that develops, manufactures and sells printing inks for challenging substrates, as well as solutions for complex printing tasks. The company is a global leader in inks for sausage casings and nonwoven hygiene materials such as diapers. They also hold a strong position in inks for food packaging, shrink sleeves, and the pharmaceutical and medico industries.
Resino contacted PPS Automation, with a need for a custom automated solution. They were investing in a new, large filling line, and wanted to automate a previously manual process: picking a bucket from stacked pallets, digitally printing and applying a label, and placing the bucket onto the filling line.
3-in-1 solution
Since no standard equipment could meet the requirements, a custom solution was necessary. Resino had concerns about feasibility, but after a thorough initial dialogue and technical input from PPS, a viable model was outlined. Based on this and through continuous collaboration, PPS developed a robot-based automation solution. The solution includes de-palletizing buckets using a UR10e collaborative robot, followed by full-color label printing and direct application to the buckets before they are placed on a conveyor for filling.
What makes the solution unique is the inline full-color label printing, driven by real-time data from Resino’s ERP system. The label is applied to a conical bucket, which is then placed directly onto the filling line – eliminating the need for an infeed system. The robot already handles each bucket during labeling, enabling this integration.
Thanks to the force feedback of the UR10e and a custom 3D-printed gripper, the robot can detect the edge of the bucket and secure the handle, avoiding interference with buckets further down the stack.

“PPS are nerds in the best way. They are solution-oriented and fully engaged – even when the task requires a custom-built solution rather than off-the-shelf equipment. We’ve really enjoyed the collaboration and hope to continue it in the future.”

A solution that contributes to sustainability goals
Like many other industries, Resino faces increasing demands around product safety, sustainability, and social responsibility. The company continuously strives to reduce its environmental impact by using green energy, improving systems and workflows, and sending packaging materials for recycling. PPS Automation’s solution aligns perfectly with these ambitions. The automation solution contributes significantly to reducing waste, as the bucket is filled with ink only when an order is ready. This eliminates the need to store large volumes of pre-filled buckets, which might otherwise expire over time. In addition, the labels are not printed until the specific color order is confirmed, leaving no labels wasted.
“From a work environment perspective, this solution has been a major improvement. It eliminates poor posture and repetitive manual work. In addition, we now have a station that doesn’t require manning, which frees up one of our team members for other tasks.”
The solution has also improved workplace ergonomics. The previous manual process was strenuous, involving repetitive movements and poor posture. Now, the task is automated, enhancing employee well-being. Additionally, the automation has freed up staff for more value-adding activities – increasing overall flexibility in operations.
